Syncline - Mtn. Biking

Thor & I went mountain biking this past weekend at Syncline -- a great mountain biking area on the North side of the Columbia River across the river from Mosier, OR.

Here's the view from the trail mid-way up.
Thor - making his cranky face - after the screw fell out of the bottom of his shoe and partially detached his cleat. Luckily we were able to come up with a great make-shift option so we could continue biking!

Riding uphill to the top of the climb.

'New' Old House Picture

I just found this picture on my work computer -- it's a great shot of what the front of the house used to look like -- you can even see the hideous holly tree in the upper right hand corner of the picture and the big yews on either side of the front porch that we dug out last year! I can't believe how different everything looks now.

Around the same time I took the above picture Thor & I decided we had just HAD IT with the ugly, white, cursivey columns and rails on our front porch.....well, almost. We realized we couldn't actually cut out the structural support of the columns, but we took the Sawzall to the rest of the railing and chopped it out. Our long term plan is to encompass the verticals in solid columns of some sort so that it doesn't look like a 75-year old couple does the decorating.

Weekend Work Party + Phase 1 Planting

This past weekend we had some friends over to help us on a HUGE yard project: pulling out our front hedge. Here is the 'before' picture with my mom & Thor working on cutting the hedge.
Here's the stack of hedge on the sidewalk after we ripped it out.

The bank 'after.' We took over 3000 lbs. of hedge to the compost facility on Saturday!

Our friend, Tom, pulling old railway ties out of our backyard. These suckers are heavy!

Here's the front bank after. On the left side of this picture you can see the Coral Bark Maple that we put in the other day.

Here's the West side of our front bank -- at the top is a Redwood Dogwood that we moved from the East side of our bank (it was crowding out a Japanese Maple). Below that is a new little 'Red Dragon' Japanese Maple.

A close up of the coral bark maple.

Here's a shot of our original Japanese Maple that we took the dogwood and spirea away from. It has much more space to spread out now -- and we moved the sedge from a container we had in the back. A LOT of work!

Copper Creek Hut Trip

Two weekends ago Thor and I joined a large group of friends to ski into the Copper Creek Hut near Mt. Rainier. It rained much of the time -- but we had a great time playing games inside the hut - and we even got a little sledding in!

The group at the trail head before the four mile trip in.

Thor - practicing balancing!

Our 'drive-through' beer window. We just had to open window to grab a nice cold one!

Nick & Lily - our junior trip members!

Thor, reading very intently. He finished an entire book in one day! ('Stranger In The Forest' - William gave it to him, and Thor says it is great!)

Thor crashing his sled!

Me on the way to crashing my sled!

All in all it was a great weekend! We got about 5 inches of fresh snow on the last night we were there - so it made for an absolutely beautiful ski out the following morning.

Cherry Blossom Classic - Stage 1 - Columbia Hills Road Race

Here's a little more of a break down from the race last Friday. The wind was blowing hard and the 1/2/3 women shot off the starting line and went out HARD. Needless to say I think I was the first person dropped (my whole 'no interval' training plan is not paying off!). I rode with one or two other stragglers for the first ten miles, but they were hard to organize into any sort of pace line because they were all like "well we're off the back anyways - so it doesn't matter". very frustrating. Once we got to the hill on the back side of the course I spotted a pack of about 10 women midway up the hill and decided I would rather be riding with them than on my own. Now - those of you who have seen me on my bike riding uphill know that I'm no hill-climbing rockstar - so it is a testamount to my desperation NOT to ride the remaining 40 miles in the hurricane head wind by myself that I actually caught this group of women while riding uphill! I've never been so happy to see Annie & Abby in my life -- and as I came gasping onto the back of the pack Annie announces to me that she & Abby are just about to "make their move". blargh. a big thank you to Abby for making me go with them - i didn't think I'd make it, but she pretty firmly ordered me to get on her wheel, so I did, and ended up having a great time racing with them for the remainder of the course......until 1K to go...

We saw that the pro1/2 men were going to catch up with us so we dutifully pulled over to the far right edge of the road to let them go by. As the lead car went by I decided to glance over my shoulder to see how far back the men were -- expecting a couple car lengths at least becaue the lead car always seems to be way out ahead. But, um, no. Instead I glance over my shoulder and the entire men's peleton of about 50 riders is about 3 feet behind me! I totally didn't expect them to be so close and it gave me vertigo and in my dizzy state I dropped my front wheel off the side of the road into some nice, soft gravel. ack! I had a split second where I considered trying to bunny hop my front tire back up onto the road and then I was like "wait a second - if I f$&% this up I'm going to take out the entire Pro men's peleton and no one will ever talk to me again!!!" so instead I bailed off the road into the barb-wire ditch (unfortunately the shoulder was not flat here -- more like a 3 foot drop), cyclocross dismounted and started running my bike. At this point Im' thinking maybe no one has seen this happen and I will never have to speak about the incident -- but instead I hear Jake (my teammate) go "Sarah!??!?" as he whizzes by. shit. so i wait for the guys to go by, and their follow car, and their wheel car, and their second follow car and then I hop back up onto the road, get back on my bike and ride the remaining 1/2 K to the finish line to finish almost a full minute behind Abby & Annie. Super.

Aside from that little adventure though I had a great time racing on Friday. It was a big treat for me to be able to ride with Abby & Annie -- the weather was beautiful (if you ignored the wind) -- and it was nice that it was warm enough not to have to ride in 9 wool base layers!

Annie, Abby & I riding in a rotating paceline during the 1st stage.

The rest of the weekend was fun too -- a really nice TT course -- a fun crit downtown that a lot of locals came to watch -- and an absolutely breathtaking last stage (due to both the hill climb and the amazing views of the gorge). I would highly, highly, highly recommend this race for any out of town bike racing family members who might want to come visit us next spring (HINT HINT Erica, John & Kirkham!!)

Cherry Blossom Classic - Columbia Gorge Road Race - Stage 4

Here are some shots to look through of the final race on Sunday. I only have a couple with Abby, Annie & I in them, but visit OregonCyclingAction to see shots of the course -- the first eight pictures really give you a great idea of how beautiful it is out there!!!

Me, Annie & Abby waiting to line up.

AND still waiting to go off.

Cherry Blossom Classic - Stage 3 - Cherry City Crit

Here are some pictures from the Cherry City Crit that was part of the stage race last weekend.

Cherry Blossom Classic - Columbia Hills Road Race - Stage 1

I'm back from the Cherry Blossom Classic. GREAT RACE!!! I won't write much now -- but here are some pictures from the first stage on Friday (these are all pictures of the men's fields -- but you'll get an idea of the amazing country we rode through). We had 30 mile-per-hour headwind gusts the entire race - it was insane! But I had a fabulous time riding through beautiful country.
